Some strategies for educating people about linguistics

What to do when someone corrects your pronunciation

As someone who talks about language on the internet and whose audience is mostly language nerds, people love to correct my pronunciation—but not always for good reasons! Here are some strategies I’ve discovered over the years for what to do when someone corrects your pronunciation of a word, and how you can educate them a little about linguistics while they’re at it!

Also, if you’re interested in the Speaking American book I mention in the video, I have a review of the book here:

Speaking American: How y’all, youse, and you guys talk
A beautiful and engaging coffee table book of 122 dialect maps showing how different regions of the U.S. say different things. A wonderful illustration of dialect diversity in the United States, this book is sure to spark great conversations. A must-have for any language lover.
